American Spiritual Ensemble

The most pure style of the Negro Spiritual. The famous American Spiritual Ensemble returns to Spain to offer at the International Festival of Santander the most native version of “American Negro Spiritual”, as an example of the definitive interculture over time. The fusion of African and European villages in the United States of American  from the late years of the XVIII Century and the first decades of the XIX make up an exemplary songbook that today we know thanks to the investigative and interpretive work of the hardworking groups, such as the American Spiritual Ensemble. The religious nostalgia of the Negro Spiritual is the intercultural proposal of this virtuous group of Americans that claims our sensibility to the pleasure of choral singing.

Scola Gregoriana Brugensis

Songs of happiness and thanksgiving. Songs of mass and craft for the feast of the Asunción de la Virgen María.

The Scola Gregoriana de Brujas comes together with their songs of praise to the 60 years of the Festival with expression of gratitude for their intimate relationship along the years. After the Salve Festa, the initial procession hymn, the principal song of the supposed Hispanic origin, Te Deum laudamus, immerses you then in the paschal songs full of joy that Gregorian singing have left us.

The second part of the program is dedicated to the Asunción de María, key festival of the Catholic religion, and next in time. They sing alternatively the songs of celebration and of adoration indicated for this day: “Kyriale IX (cum jubilo)”. The recital ends with the hymn to María “Magnificat” and the evening prayer.

Isidro Barrio

From the Baroque Period to the great pianissimo of romantic Europe. One Spanish pianist defined by Leonard Bernstein as “an artist that interprets the old European style, full of grandeur and dignity”, Isidro Barrio, is today interpreter of the Spanish Baroque for antonomasia, that of the Sonatas of the father Soler, and is translator of the first romanticism that Beethoven constructed with his Sonata “Claro de luna” as well as devoted vehicle of romanticism of Franz Liszt with a selection of his poetic and religious harmonies, exquisite pianistic writing of the poetry of Lamartine.

50 anniversary of the death of Jesús Guridi

The organist J. Javier Gastón, presents a historic panorama of organ music in which the figure of Jesús Guridi permeates the three programs of an anthological cycle, in order to pay homage to the 50th anniversary of his death.

Carmina Burana

The version of the masterpiece of the composer Carl Orff that you will hear in Laredo summarizes the 15 choral episodes that form his Carmina Burana, with original accompaniment of two pianos and percussion. The verses are located in a Benedictine monastery of Beuren, a German town of Bavaria, and above all else, in the Latin of the Middle Ages. Orff has written one of the most beautiful and imaginative musical pages combining old styles with the most exciting piano and percussive timbre of the present.

The Carmina Burana are expressions of delight, exaltation of nature, of carnal love, of partying and orgy, at the same time a social critique of civil and ecclesiastic power. It is a playful and scathing vision of the “dark” Middle Ages transmitted across the “Goliardic songs” of the XII Century. Carl Orff achieves with all of this an elemental work full of vigor and life, especially in his original version that today you may hear.

Grupo Alturas – Peru

Song of 1000 roots, a song of interculture. The group Alturas de Perú accomplishes its Song of 1000 Roots with a synthesis of latin-american folklore to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Independence of many countries of geographic and cultural latitudes. There will be Andean Harawi, Paraguayan Polka, Bolivian Cuenca and the exciting models of Argentinian Zamba, rituals of the Amazon, among other manifestations of Columbia and popular references of their Peruvian origin that this group proposes as claim of an interculture.

Photograph Exhibition “Luz y agua” by José García Pérez

José García Pérez, photographer and manager of Foto San Vicente, displays in the Castillo del Rey in San Vicente de la Barquera, under the title of “Luz y agua,” a sample of his extensive work. One significant part of the exhibition is made of his panoramic vision of San Vicente de la Barquera, showing the architectural heritage and landscape of the town, completing the exhibition with a photograph of the author much more personal and intimate, where he shows his artistic capabilities to translate into a photograph that which he feels.

One more time, nonchalantly, a nerve point and above all else a feeling of humor and tenderness, the opera converts an argument to tell a story. Or said in a more successful form: the stories allow us to get close to all the audience in the opera. And to the theatre. “I tell you… an opera. Otel(l)o”  offers us a challenge: to tell that which shouldn’t be told to someone who wants to listen. Playing to be little and to be older, to learn what is “to be jealous” and to enjoy, of course, the music of Verdi.

Divine Emotional Songs

The music of the Oriental Orthodox Church is and expression of emotions of the heart, that is to say attrition, divine punishment, and also tribute, praise, gratitude, and holy enthusiasm. The Byzantine music expresses “the most honest” of the Christian religion, the delight in the worth of the soul, that is to say that spiritual fragrance to which approaches only the spiritual senses that people feel when they participate in the liturgical experience. It is made of a wise foundation of many centuries, one divine song that even now, excites and leads the spirits of man to divine devotion.
