Cantabria is a historic region and autonomous province in Spanish. Bordered on the east by the Basque Country (province of Biscay), the south by Castile and León (provinces of León, Palencia and Burgos), on the west by the Principality of Asturias and the north by the Cantabrian Sea. The city of Santander is the capital and most populous city with 182,302 inhabitants, followed immediately by the industrial centers of Torrelavega (55,910) and Camargo (31,086) and the coastal town of Castro Urdiales (30,814 de jure). His earliest references date from the year 195 BC C., when the Roman writer Cato the Elder speaks in his Origins of the source of the river Ebro in the country of Cantabria.
