In the heart of the Bay of Santander, on the seafront, the new Maritime Museum offers visitors Cantabric one of the richest and varied proposals museum dedicated to the sea and the men who hold the existence, in grappling with it, how many are offered in Spain.

It has large, modern aquarium and more than three thousand square meters of exhibition showing all forms of man’s relationship with the sea over time.

Temporary exhibition in the hall of MMC on NAOS “THE Cachon and relatives Cantabric”

Officially named as cuttlefish, Cachón is a very popular in markets and on traditional cuisine. His capture has been an activity of the artisanal fisheries.

It feeds on small molluscs, crabs, shrimp, fish and others of the same species. Among predators include dolphins, sharks, fish, seals and others of their same species. Live one to two years.

Opening times:

Winter: (October 1 to April 30)

Summer: (May 2 to September 30)

Closed: Every Monday, January 1, Good Friday, May 1 and December 25

Collections:

The collections of the MMC began to form in the eighteenth century, later enriched by such illustrious groups as the Free Institution of Education, College of Nautical Studies of Santander, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Center for Mountain Studies.

The high value and exciting diversity of its funds have helped to structure the program into four major sections exhibition – Life at Sea (Marine Biology), Fishermen and fisheries (Fisheries Ethnography) The Cantabrian sea and in history (History) and technological vanguard against the sea (Technology) – through which they are shown from different viewpoints, many issues affecting the Bay of Biscay and its projection to the rest of the world.

Life at sea

The visitor has the opportunity to venture into the heart of the ocean waters, through the large aquarium tanks. They live much of the fauna of Biscay. After contemplating the first permanent Spanish laboratory dedicated to the study of the sea (1886-1914), explained and described the great diversity of underwater life.

Fishermen and fisheries

The section that deals with people fishing starts with the presence of the first communities were faced with the marine environment. The craft, the boats, the unique life forms and social organization and manner of sale and industry complement the landscape.

And the Cantabrian Sea in history

Maritime activity has been, at least, for two thousand years, an important factor, both spatial and economic revitalization of this coastal area. It left many ships and men from all walks toward the sea on the planet.

Trade, scientific expeditions, coastal defense and the war on the sea are some aspects that are explained by processes exhibiting advanced.

Technological vanguard against the sea

Construction and shipbuilding industry, the dominance of the most suitable procedures for navigation and penetration into the underwater world has been made and the tools that allow the man to venture into the hostile environment and succeed in the adventure.
